To explain a little more - this is the ONLY event that this group has where the members who get to be in the single are randomized. Miku has been in the group for around 10 years and hasn't been on a single since 2010. So for her, this is a HUGE deal. Plus, since she won the whole thing, she gets to stand in the middle which means lots of exposure - which leads to more opportunities for TV and magazine work. So for US this is rock paper scissors, for her this is a lot more.
Think about lottery, there is "nothing special" when u draw a number of balls out of a container correctly, but when you associate a lots of profit with it, people act very differently.
Similarly, the organizer/record producer wanted to make the game exciting, so they associated the opportunity to be the lead singer in AKB48 for the upcoming single (that all other 47 members have been fighting so hard for), their CD easily get million sale almost every time, (it's a very popular girl band in the Asia), and the exposure that comes with it, product endorsement, tv commercial, j-drama acting opportunity etc
The producers announced this little game during the AKB48 concert, stating the upcoming single's lead singer will be chosen randomly (by mean of rock paper scissor) amount the 48 members, that post is usually monopolized by a few member who are very popular and pretty. While not-so-popular members often fade in obscurity, this provide a chance for the underdog to climb up.
